Character Grade is cut from the closest to the center heart of the tree, providing more knots, cracks, and natural grain, giving it an “Old World” floor feel.
Light Character Grade (often referred to as “Pippy”) is cut slightly further North and South from the center of the heartwood, resulting in less knotting compared to the Character Grade. Some boards in this grade may even be free of knots, but they may have occasional sap lines along the edges. This grade can offer a more natural and modern appearance.
Select Grade is cut furthest from the center Heartwood. This method allows for the cleanest grade, with only a few eraser-size knots. Unlike the other grades, Select is free of Sap Wood, providing a clean, modern look.
